The Department of Physical Education has come a long way since its establishment with the inception of the college in 1968. We dedicate ourselves to the mission of training woman for academic excellence, development of skill and character formation based on the love of God and the service to the society and the country. Smt. Hemalatha. V, Head of the Department had been the resource person in many seminars and one amongst them is ‘Yoga- Secure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for society’ organized by Govt. Arts and Science College Neyyatinkara. She has also presented scientific papers in the International and National conferences in Yoga and Sports. Smt. Hemalatha is a P.hD. scholar at Calicut University.
Smt. Agibet Mathews, Assistant Professor joined the department in 2018 as regular appointment in the retirement vacancy. I have completed M.Phil. from Kannur University and currently doing my Ph.D. program on Dance movement therapy. I have been resource person for various workshops and seminars conducted by different government and govt. aided colleges across Kerala .
Department of Physical Education engages its students in academic and sports activities. Sports here are all about hard work and opportunities. The aim of the department is to channelize youthful energy of the students by their participation in Sports and Games during their studentship at the college. Department provides its students with excellent infrastructure, financial support and vigorous training. As a result, the department is embellished with many Olympians like Anju Bobby George, Bobby Aloysius, Jincy Philip, Rossakutty, Manjima kuriakose, International, National, State & University level players across various sports disciplines. Talent and hard work remain the sole requirements at our college. We train our students to organize Departmental activities throughout the year to enhance their organizing and management skill. Not only do we believe in achievements in sports, but we also believe in promoting health and wellness in the society. The college offers health and fitness club and swimming pool facilities to the general public thus ensuring maximum participation in physical activities.
Department organizes various competitions on regular basis for students and staff to provide an environment for physical development and to provide opportunity to the student to showcase their talent in sports field.
Department offers specialized coaching in Athletics, Ball badminton, Baseball, Boxing, Cricket, Chess, Cross-country, Fencing, Handball, Judo, Kabaddi, Powerlifting, Swimming, Softball, Netball, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Wushu, Tug of War and Yoga.
History of the Department
The Department of Physical Education has come a long way since its establishment with the inception of the college in 1968.This Department; based on the achievements and contributions to the society, is responsible for bringing fame and glory to the University ,State of Kerala and the nation. Former Head of the Department, Anne Mary Varghese (1967 – 1998) played a pivotal role in building the Department to greater heights. The yeoman efforts and achievements culminated in bringing her “ Ghani award “for the best teacher in Calicut University. Besides Competitive sports, teaching & research and sports for health & recreation have received great attention under Dr Mary Antony, Associate Professor and Head of the Department who has completed her PhD under the faculty development program. She was awarded travel Grant by the University Grants Commission for presenting scientific paper at the 6th ASPASP international congress on Sports Psychology at Taiwan, 2011. Hemalatha. V, resource person in yoga presented scientific paper in the International conference on Yoga Lonavala, Pune, 2011.
